Teaching kids to create strong, memorable passwords is a crucial skill that balances security with practicality. In fact, we can all use help remembering all the passwords we need to keep cyber secure.
Age-Appropriate Password Ideas
For Young Children (Ages 5-8)
- Picture-Based Passwords: Help them create passwords using a sequence of things they can visualize, like “BlueDogSunnyDay22!”
- Favorite Characters: Use characters from books or movies they love, add numbers and symbols: “PeppaP!g123”
For Older Children (Ages 9-12)
- Secret Code System: Create a consistent method for transforming words, like using the first two letters of each word in a phrase: “My favorite game is Minecraft” becomes “MafagaisMi!”
- Password Formula: Teach them a consistent formula: Favorite color + Number + Symbol + Favorite animal = “Purple7#Tiger”
Parental Oversight Balance
- Keep a sealed envelope with their passwords in a secure location for emergencies
- For younger children, always log in with them
- Periodically review
Teaching Password Safety Rules
- Use over 10 characters
- Never share passwords with friends
- Different accounts need different passwords
- Avoid personal information (birthdate, address, pet names)
- Change passwords if they’re accidentally revealed
- Use two-factor authentication for important accounts when available
Having these conversations over dinner can work toward a lifelong digital safety habit for everyone.
